Olympic Thoughts!

The Olympics are such an exciting time for everyone around the world because we are all unified by the power of teamwork and sportsmanship to cheer our respective teams on in the greatest sports competition in the world. The first Olympic event I remember watching was the men’s swimming event at the 2000 Sydney Games, and I was so inspired and in awe of the athletes’ skill and dedication. My family and I watched all the events including synchronized swimming, and although I had not started swimming yet, little did I know that it would become such a big part of my life.

The Summer Olympics were always my favorite because although I love snow, I am biased towards summer because of the synchronized swimming (of course) but also because all the sports in the summer season remind me of the California sun and spirit I love so much here. After being a competitive synchronized swimming for 6 years, I joined Aqualillies and got to experience the sport not as a competition but a form of entertainment. It was a nice change and it’s been great so far knowing how versatile synchronized swimming (also called synchro) can be, which is part of the reason I love it so much. It does have its origins in entertainment and showcases, but has evolved to such an advanced degree that it’s become so much more than just a sport. It can be and is a way of life for many of us involved in it.

Although the US synchronized swimming team didn’t qualify for the Games this time, we still have the amazing duet of Mary Killman and Mariya Koroleva representing us. I’ve heard such great things about the two and I know they’ve been working so hard and will swim their hearts out! I’ve always wondered what life is like for an Olympic athlete at the games, and luckily you can read more about training, competing, living, and everything else through Mary and Mariya’s blogs of their journey (both of which I’ve been following) at http://marykillman.blogspot.com/ and http://mariyakoroleva.blogspot.co.uk/

I can’t wait to see what the London 2012 Olympic Games has in store for all of us, and while the opening ceremonies are airing on TV, I will be at the Beverly Hills Hotel supporting the ‘Lillies in their summer soiree Cointreau series! I’m excited to see them for the first time. Happy Olympics and GO TEAM USA!
